My Journey with Therapy: Breaking Down Misconceptions
As I reflect on my journey with therapy, I’m reminded of the suffocating grip of mental health struggles that once held me captive. Before I sought help, I was shrouded in misconceptions, naively believing that therapy was only for those with severe mental health issues or that it was a sign of weakness. However, my experiences have taught me that therapy is a beacon of hope, a sign of strength, and a valuable tool for anyone looking to shatter the chains of mental health struggles.
Hitting Breaking Point
In August 2020, I hit a breaking point, like a shipwrecked sailor lost at sea. Looking back, there were signs that I had ignored or downplayed, like whispers in the wind. One particularly challenging incident led to me being picked up by the police 40 miles from home in my car, with no recollection of how I got there. The darkness closed in around me, and I was desperate for a lifeline.
The Start of My Therapy
The police intervention led to a referral to a crisis team, and that’s when my therapy started. I was given the opportunity to participate in an intensive 7-day counselling course at a self-referral centre, where I had to confront the demons that had haunted me for so long. This was followed by 12 weeks of remote counselling, a lifeline that helped me stay afloat in the turbulent sea of my emotions.
The Impact of Therapy
Through therapy, I learned to navigate the treacherous waters of my emotions, develop coping strategies, and work through challenging experiences. I was never judged or prejudged; instead, I was listened to, and plans were put in place to help me help myself. This approach empowered me to take control of my mental health and work towards recovery.
A Setback: Prison and Mental Health
However, my journey was not without setbacks. Being sentenced to prison was a significant challenge to my mental health. The harsh realities of prison life, with its daily battles with drugs and violence, were a wake-up call. As a first-time prisoner, I was unprepared for the environment and the struggles that came with it. Despite the challenges, I realised that my previous issues had become less significant in comparison to the struggles of those around me. This realisation showed me that therapy had worked, and I was better equipped to manage my mindset.
Finding Solace in Unexpected Places
During my time in prison, I found solace in my strong Christian faith, which gave me a sense of purpose and hope. I also discovered the therapeutic power of poetry, which helped me unload my thoughts and emotions into words. Writing poetry became a way for me to express myself and find calm in the midst of chaos. Additionally, the prison radio station, hosted by ex-inmates, provided a unique form of support and motivation. Hearing their stories and experiences gave me hope and reminded me that rehabilitation was possible.
Continuing Support After Release
Upon release from prison, I was offered an 8-week wellbeing course, which provided further therapy and support. This course helped me to continue my journey towards healing and recovery, and it gave me the tools and strategies I needed to manage my mental health.
Managing My Mindset
Although I still experience flashbacks and struggle with certain experiences, therapy has given me the tools to manage my mindset. It’s not easy, and there are still moments when I struggle. However, I’m learning to take things one day at a time and focus on my mental well-being.
Overcoming Obstacles
Recently, I’ve faced new challenges, including having to admit one of my parents into a care home for their safety. This has been difficult, especially coming on the back of daily hospital visits, holding down a job, and ensuring I’m there for my family. However, the therapy and coping strategies I’ve developed have helped me navigate these obstacles. I’m learning to prioritise my mental health while supporting my loved ones.

Everyone’s story is unique, and what may be a challenge for one person may not be the same for another. My journey shows that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but rather a personalised approach to mental health. By breaking down the barriers and stigma surrounding therapy, I hope to encourage others to seek help and recognise that it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.
