Fading Into Alzheimer

By Nusrat Jahan Sumaiya

Winter again, same old lane,
spent life mostly where breathing is a game.

House of memories,
empty room, ruined paint.
Blurry windows, sunlight is faint.

Decades of joy were kept in a jar,
now broken, fled too far.

Colourful pills, I forget the number.
Memories leave me alone to deal with Alzheimer.

Long hallway adorned the most,
Now a maze I wander as a ghost.

Life stopped following logic.
Who knew walking would feel this tragic?

Familiarity feels like a distant dream.
Barely can talk, only a muted scream.

Becoming a clueless stranger,
loving faces evaporate like steam.

Dry leaves struggle on branches to linger.
A strange journal, I don’t know how to read.
Maybe words used to guide me,
where ink took the lead.

Silent witness is the moon.
How I struggle to hold the spoon.

Too much labour to swallow food,
I don’t know if I could.

Thread of connection turns off,
when memories can’t stay on.

Years of experience, so many eyes,
slipping through my hands, now everything is a lie.

Friends stopped cheering up,
but the sun stayed.
The moon never judged,
Clouds were never late.

Time passes without giving a visit.
Dates and months now untouched receipts.

Supporter walls never let me fall.
Nowadays, days come heavy,
sleep stays long.

Becoming a human statue,
unable to move.
What did I do wrong?

Photo album lays unnoticed,
like a laser light I fail to catch.
Melodies pass, a broken whisper.
Fire nearly lit by an old match.

Blurry mirror reflecting dim light,
How did I lose the meaning of sight?

Winter is leaving, but not without me.
White butterfly is setting to be free.

Unfortunately, no,
The last 7 minute theory didn’t work for me.

I am fading with every blink,
leaving memories to all those ink.
